On September 26, 1888 Thomas Stearns Eliot was born in St. Louis, Missouri. He attended Harvard and earned his undergraduate and masters degrees. Eliot then went to Sorbonne for a year, but then went back to Harvard for his doctorate in Philosophy. In 1914 he finally settled in England. He held a few odd jobs before working for Faber & Faber, a publishing house, as a literary editor. He eventually became director of the company. While in London, Eliot was influenced by Ezra Pound. She took interest in him after she realized how good of a writer he was and helped him publish his works in his early career, like Poetry in 1915. In 1922, The Waste Land, one of Eliot’s most famous poetry books was published and deemed by countless as a very powerful piece. He felt he had a religious calling soon after and joined the Anglican Church in 1927. He also wrote many plays. From 1930 to 1960 in many parts of the world Eliot was the leading man in both poetry and criticism of literature. Countless people called him one of the greatest enterprising leaders in poetry during the twentieth century. He made older poetry newer with more innovative poetic styles and topics. Eliot has immensely affected modern poetry diction. He received the Nobel Prize of Literature in 1948. In London, on January 4, 1965 T.S. Eliot died. His ancestors are from East Coker, Somerset, England, so his ashes were brought to the Parish Church of Saint Michael e still there today. A memorial was made in Poet’s Corner of Westminster Abbey in London, England for Eliot. (1,2,3)
